I've been seriously looking into making a game/mod and I've started testing games/engines. I was working on my own game engine, but with the current time table it would be finished in about 20-30 years. :D
The candidates:
- Crysis / CryEngine2
- Half-Life 2 / Source
- UT3 / Unreal3
I bought Crysis just for testing the editor and SDK, I don't really like the game that comes with the engine. :)
People seem to always point at Crysis when talking about "VC3", yes it has eyecandy, yes it has nice vegetation, BUT in general it has lousy documentation and none for programming. The editor is BRILLIANT, the best I've seen, it just needs better support from Crytek, hopefully they wake up before the game is dead... One of the biggest drawbacks here is the lack of AI in multiplayer, I sure hope that they fix this, because without it I'm not really interested in it at all.
Half-Life 2 / Source is already quite old and it's never been about the eyecandy but GAMEPLAY, which is the most important thing. We don't play VC1 for the good looks, eh? :)
It has loads of tutorials, code snippets etc. and a huge modding community and there's already more mods that there ever will be for any Crytek game. This is the most promising candidate.
Unreal3, the engine has been developed over the years and it has big modding community and it has some nice mods. I have no experience with it yet, I haven't got the game yet but I've already ordered it to have a closer look at the tools. It seems to have decent documentation and good tools. A good runner up?
In my opinion, the sensible choice is HL2/Source, it's old, it has great support and more players than all the other FPS games combined. But it's easy to get seduced by the eyecandy and sexy editor of Crysis.
This definitely needs more investigation and more experimenting with all three games.
What I've done so far?
- Modified HL2: Deathmatch to include AI, animations work and they kill each other and players, made a custom game DLL
- Modified the nanosuit in Crysis, made a custom game DLL
There's 4 important things to test out with each game/engine:
- How easy it is to implement a new basic game mode
- How to get new objects/buildings/props into the game
- How to get new weapons into the game
- How to get the AI working in multiplayer for co-op game modes
Which ever candidate wins, the work should be started using as many of the existing assets as possible, just adding maps, game modes and other stuff before moving to do a total conversion.
I could try to put together a team, one thing that it really needs is another coder besides me, I can't do everything, I just don't have the time for it. Modellers and mappers shouldn't be a problem, there's plenty of talented people on this forum. :)
I'm looking for experienced VC1/2 people, if someone's really interested in this, PM me and we'll see what happens. |

i dont know how you can say the graphics arent nice. i think there can something be done cause it already supports new stuff like normals, reflections etc...
yeah to the advantages of HL2 i have to add that it runs on bad computers and can look pretty nice on better computers |

This is what I would like Vietcong 3 to be.
1) Theme
The CIA's supersecret CCN - Command and Control North. These guys did the super secret and illegal missions into forbidden areas, even beyond what the Rangers did. They did insertions and information gathering in Cambodia, Laos, North Vietnam and southern China.
The Green Berets were given this special reconnaissance task after they were taken over by the Army from the CIA, and moved away from 'force multiplication' (training Montagnards) to special reconnaissance (in politically forbidden areas like Cambodia/Laos/North Vietnam/China). Their operations had names like Daniel Boone, Prairy Fire, Leaping Lena, Project Delta, Project Gamma.
Project Delta was headed by B52, and between 1965 and 1967 consisted of:
16 Strike/Recondo platoons of 3 LLDBs and 3 Special Forces
8 Roadrunner platoons of 4 indigenous personnel
1 External Reaction Force of 6 companies from the ARVN's 81st Airborne Rangers.
These Roadrunners would often wear VC or NVA uniforms and infiltrate along Indochinese part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

11 Special Reconnaissance
1. Project Delta
" By 1965, Project Delta fielded only six combined Reconnaissance/Hunter-Killer teams, each containing eight carefully selected LLDB and two Special Forces members. These were backed up by the three-company South Vietnamese 91st Airborne Ranger Battallion, activated during November 1964 under LLDB auspices, using CIDG recruits at Nha Trang. However, some earlier teams were entirely American or South Vietnamese. Project Delta was even used as a camp reinforcement unit, examplified by Major Beckwith's valiant relief expedition to Camp Plei Me in October, a function later performed by Mike Forces. "

2) Gameplay

Better coordination. Because of the lack of coordination, much of the gameplay consists of players running around hoping to shoot the enemy before they get shot themselves. Instead, if there were several squads (alpha team, delta team, gamma team). One team could then hold a position, another team could move around to dislodge the enemy, and a third team could act as a reserve for new troops, supply health and ammo, and protect the commander.
This would give more structure to the combat. Players would be able to rise in rank from Sergeant to Team Leader to Captain. The captain could define strategy, ok artillery and air support, etc.
- ranks
Although all special forces were either NCOs or officers, there are ranks within the sergeants ranks. A player could be voted Team Leader, with other sergeants leading individual squads. This would greatly increase unit cohesion. Squads and platoons should replace the present loose 'clans'. Cooperation is one the most fun and bonding parts of Vietcong.
- organisation
Instead of having clans, why not have units - squads, platoons, etc. Maybe even a base commander (Captain Rosenfeld) who can coordinate airstrikes, artillery and give objectives to the squads.
- Background Audio
It would be supercool if you could play your favorite music in the background. Nothing is more immersive than making snap decisions and taking down scores of enemies while rocking out.
- Deaths
More gruesome and longer. :) That would give players an extra incentive not to get killed. It is also very amusing (in videogames, not in real life of course).
3) Bugs
- Multi-player lag
This affects the game play, because you often keep on shooting as you are not sure whether you hit the enemy. This exposes you to more risk than you would naturally take.
- Objects
It is an irritating disruption to the gameplay when you get stuck in the landscape, or stuck behind another soldier. Also, players can move through solid objects.
- Voices
Could it be possible to get the original cast of Tour Of Duty to do the voices? I am sure they would get a kick out of it.
- Windows Vista
Continued compatability with this operating system would be great too. Right now, I installed VC2 on Vista with no problems, but VC won't install so far.
4) Personalized Faces
Wouldn't it be great if instead of you could morph your photograph into a face for Vietcong? This would personalize the game a lot more than the usual 4 faces of the US side of Vietcong.
5) Female Vietcong
This would add realism and more identification for the female players.
