F.A.Q
  1) Why is it called Red Dawn?
Maybe because the new single-player mission, Rice Fields, has a beautiful red sky?

2) How much does Vietcong: Red Dawn cost?
Glad you asked. It’s free. It is available for download on Auscong *HERE*

3) Tell me about Red Dawn’s new single-player mission.
Red Dawn’s new single-player mission is a sniper mission, played on a totally new map: Rice Fields. The map is enormous, filled with rice fields of all shapes and sizes. Some fields are growing, some are flooded; some are mud. The low dikes provide little cover. There are four farms. Look up for the most beautiful Red Sky you have ever seen.

The mission? A US chopper gets shot down and crash lands on a farm. From the air, you get to use a M2.50 cal. to protect the downed crew but there are just too many VC. A ground force is needed to effect a rescue. Captain Rosenfield decides to insert only one person (YOU) to save the pilot.

You play as a sniper. There are at least four VC Dragunov snipers moving about in strategic kill zones around the map. That’s right, they move around. These snipers will kill you from Very Far Away. The VC know a chopper went down so beware of roving VC patrols. These 3-man or 4-man patrols will engage if they see you.

You begin with the Garand sniper rifle and 24 bullets. That ain’t enough bullets. What with shooting a few cows, and the occasional long-range “sight-drift” misses, you are gonna run out of bullets. But you will think of something.

You have to kill all the VC, including the snipers. Only then will you get a radio message telling you where to find the pilot.

4) Are there any new co-op missions? Me and my buddies like to kill VC.
You get to kill more VC on the following co-op maps: 3Canyons, RiverDale, and Frontier. New to co-op is that the spawn points move up as you gain ground. No more spawning all the way back at the beginning of the map when the fight is happening Way Over There. And while some VC are set in really good hiding places, other VC will move forward to kill you. Be alert.

5) That’s it? Only three new co-op maps?
You only asked about killing VC, three (3) maps to do that. But there are seven (7) new co-op maps where you get to kill US soldiers. Red Dawn has 10 new co-op maps. Red Dawn is really about playing as VC; you get to kill US soldiers! It’s the dawn of a new era. Go forth, my red comrades, and destroy the American capitalist pigs!

6) Great! What co-op maps let me kill US soldiers? I hear those US soldiers call me vulgar names.
You get to kill US soldiers on the following co-op maps: Against the Storm, BasesTooNear, Canyon, French Route, Frontier Wars, Jungle Grove, and NuiPekOffensive. And yes, the US soldiers will curse you all the way to your objective. Cover your ears. (Hint: tell your mom that your ears are cold.)

7) I want to be a VC and kill US soldiers. Tell me about these seven new co-op maps where I can play as VC.

Against the Storm

6-player co-op as VC. This is the Storm map. Your VC team spawns inside the US bunker. There are about ten US soldiers camping the bunker exits so getting out is a Real Problem. Random grenades are not effective because the US soldiers move around. Oh no, they are coming inside!

BasesTooNear

6-player co-op as VC. This is the IndianCountry map. Your VC team spawns inside the tunnel complex. The US soldiers camp each of the tunnel exits. In fact, more than one US soldier camps each exit so getting out is a Real Problem. The US base has an AA gun; each sandbag nest has a nice big machinegun aimed right at you.

Canyon

6-player co-op as VC. This is the Ho Chi Minh map from the original Vietcong single-player mission. You remember. You went up a narrow canyon with a bridge overhead. The canyon makes a switchback that lets you get to the bridge. Across the bridge were those ammo caches? This time your VC team spawns at the caches. You have to fight to the other end of the canyon, all the way to the abandoned VC camp.

French Route

6-player co-op as VC. This map has been popular with the custom map-makers. The US base and VC base are separated by a river with an old iron bridge. Your VC team spawns in the back of a truck. Hold on, someone in that old French concrete bunker is shooting at you! Across the road, you can use the trenches to get to that short tunnel system. The US soldiers will attack in waves across the bridge. If you camp the forward trench, expect the US soldiers to flank you.

Frontier Wars

10-player co-op as VC. Yes, 10-player co-op. Your VC team spawns at the very back of the VC base. At the same time, an entire platoon of US soldiers enter the VC base from the front. The US are here to hunt the badly outnumbered VC. They move forward to hunt YOU. If you die, expect to spawn near a US solder who will shoot you dead. Again and again and again. Why, your radioman won’t even live long enough to call a mortar strike. Very challenging. You really have no chance. Don’t try this map unless you are really good.

Jungle Grove

6-player co-op as VC. This is the Insertion map from the original Vietcong single-player mission. You remember the verdant narrow canyon, filled with green bushes and foliage. Those bamboo triangles on the ground warned of traps. That’s the one. This time, there is a helicopter in a small US base at the end of the canyon. But first you have to make it through the canyon. Behind every sharp bend an enemy waits for you. Think getting up the canyon was hard? Now try to get to the US helicopter. The US base entrance is well-protected by a machinegun that lays down a lethal barrage of suppressing fire.

NuiPekOffensive

6-player co-op as VC. This is the Medic Patrol map from the original Vietcong single-player mission. Only this time, you get to attack the village. It starts out exactly like Medic Patrol. First, you clear the village. Easy. Then you head down the road and clear out that “extra” area from the SniperHeaven map. Difficult. This map has a surprise for you after you clear the village.

8) Does Red Dawn include new bot maps, like Prophet?
In addition to Prophet, both the Arroyo and Jarai maps have new game modes CTF-bot and ATG-bot. 10-player maximum. For those times when no one will play with you. The AI is better than in Prophet. The bots will actually take a flag and score. Not against me, of course.

9) What about new CTF maps?
The following are the new Red Dawn CTF maps: BridgeCountry, Canyon, FrenchRoute, and JungleGrove.

10) Tell me about the BridgeCountry CTF map?
BridgeCountry is an enormous 64-player map, made by joining the Bridge and Jarai maps. Pterodon added two more bridges and five new machinegun nests. An MG guards each of the two flags; the other three MGs cover the various bridges.

The US flag is far behind the old VC spawn. The VC flag is in the middle of Jarai village which is set much, much further back from the old US spawn. Pterodon added many new canyons, so there are lots of new routes that take you to the flags. The canyons are deliberately laid out such that you can easily get lost and end up back where you started. Don’t be surprised if you grab the flag and then end up back at the enemy base. This is a Very Big Map.

11) I see another map, TunnelsBriefing. What is that map for?
TunnelsBriefing can be used for target practice. Every weapon is available for you to use. Plenty of targets to shoot at, including an enormous rotating cow. Yes, you can shoot this cow. Go ahead and watch this cow’s death animation; it proves that Vietcong’s game physics are among the very best. So this map lays that issue to rest.

One room has wall decoration photographs of Pterodon team members. I am guessing that is who they are. Pretty scruffy looking. Each wears a silly Vietnamese pith helmet. It is called a pith helmet, right?

Tunnels Briefing is a silly place as you cannot get out of that building. Unless you know the proper console command ….

12) Wow, Red Dawn has all this new stuff! The Red Dawn expansion disk is really free?
  • Ten maps modified to play co-op, including seven where you get to play as VC.

  • An awesome new single-player mission, Rice Fields.

  • A beautiful red sky.

  • Seven new gameplay maps, including a new 64-player CTF map, BridgeCountry.

  • New game modes and maps that let me play with ATG-bots and CTF-bots.

Yes, Red Dawn is totally free. Admit it. You feel guilty, don’t you? It is almost like stealing.
